Hello, and welcome to the website of Saskatchewan-based writer (and sometimes artist/flash fiction editor/poet) Kurt Kirchmeier. Here you’ll find news and links regarding recent and forthcoming short fiction and poetry releases, as well as general updates on what I am working on now (middle grade and young adult novels, for the most part). Follow the links on the right for more detailed information, and to stay apprised of recent developments, check back often.
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoy your visit!
I’m very pleased to announce that my short story “Four Against Chaos” will be appearing in Tesseracts 15: A Case of Quite Curious Tales, edited by Julie Czerneda and Susan MacGregor. This is an all-Canadian anthology that I’ve been dying to be a part of for years now, and the fact that this year’s edition is YA-themed just made me want to be a part of it even more. Tesseracts is published annually by EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy, and will be widely available later this year (September). ISBN# 978-1-894063-58-6
Below is the gorgeous cover art for this year’s edition, as well as the full TOC (and what a fine TOC it is!).

I’m happy to report that my flash fiction story “Clicks and Whirs” is now live at Every Day Fiction, and that my poem “Matchstick Men” is available in issue 33.4 of speculative poetry magazine Star*Line. Order info here. I hope you’ll check them out.
I’m thrilled to report that my short story “Smiles” will be appearing in a future issue of the uber-stylish comic/magazine hybrid, Murky Depths. To illustrate just how stylish and cool MD really is: They just won a British Fantasy Award for best periodical/magazine, over such stiff competition as Interzone, Black Static, and Cemetery Dance.
This will actually be my second appearance in Murky Depths, the first being back in issue #2, which is still available through the link on my purchase page. That one was a ghost story told from the perspective of a dead hooker, whereas this new one is a take on the zombie genre. Hopefully readers will like it.
I’ve decided to add a new page to my website so that I might share a few of my previously published stories. The first one I’m posting is “Souls on Display,” a contemporary fantasy piece that first hit print in 2007 and was reprinted in 2009. It also happens to be one of my personal favorites. Just click the free fiction link on the menu to read. I hope you enjoy it!
My steampunk story “Love, Must” is now available in the Hugo-award-winning super-zine, Weird Tales. I hope you’ll check out the issue. It’s a great one. Also newly available are my stories “Myths and Messerschmitts” and “Symphony of Bones,” in Tales of the Unanticipated and Withersin, respectively. “Myths” is a high-octane blend of SF and Japanese legend, and “Symphony” might well be the best piece of horror fiction I’ve written. Below are the covers for all three magazines. Click the purchase page for order information.
